The Naval Academy at Ezhimala in Kerala, which prime minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated on Thursday, is Asia's largest facility for training naval officers.

The academy, along the Arabian Sea, would churn out the next generation of India's navy officers. These officers would be different in that all of them would be professionally qualified as engineers at the end of the training. As of now a significant number of navy officers hold a simple bachelor's degree.

The navy believes the BTech degree would make the cadets better suited for challenging roles, as the Indian Navy expands. Starting June 2009, all officers inducted into the Indian Navy, under various schemes, will undergo basic training at Ezhimala in Kannur. Already, Naval Orientation Courses were being conducted here since 2005.

A comprehensive IT network, interconnecting various facilities is also being set-up. The academy will conduct a four year BTech programme for all newly-inducted trainees. Courses would be offered in ‘electronics and communicationsâ and mechanical engineering. The syllabus and the curriculum has been drafted keeping in mind technical advancements and the skill sets required to handle future acquisitions of the Indian Navy,
